Evaluation of tomato germplasm for resistance to geminiviruses in Sanarate, GT
Luis Mejia, Universidad de San Carlos, Project leader
The field evaluation trial is in a valley near Sanarate, GT, which always has a high whitefly population and continuous production of tomatoes. Currently, there are fewer and fewer fields of tomatoes as the geminiviruses have made it unprofitable to raise tomatoes in this valley. Below is a view of a commercial field in January 2003. The grower was hoeing these plants, as he did not expect any yield. It was later learned that the grower left the land for work in other places. He had been raising tomatoes here for over 20 years.
Total loss of tomatoes, January 2003.
